Richmond Students Rally Against Gun Violence

Students at Richmond’s Open High School participate in a powerful walkout protest on September 5, 2025, to advocate against gun violence, a tragic reality for many Virginia students. With a shared history of school shootings, including the notable Virginia Tech incident in 2007, the event draws attention to the urgency of the issue as students openly express their fears and frustrations.

During the protest, student leaders like 11th grader David emphasized the need for meaningful action from politicians, reflecting on personal experiences that have shaped their perspectives on safety in schools. “Adults, people with fully formed brains, will understand they are not focusing on the correct thing,” said another student organizer, Rose Woodward, highlighting their hopes of being the generation that ends this alarming trend. This demonstration came only hours after a separate incident at Kecoughtan High School, where a gun was found in a student’s bag.
