Recent data reveals a troubling increase in suicide rates among older adults using handguns, especially in rural areas of the Mountain West. A study by The Trace highlights that white males over 70 are at the highest risk, with suicide rates triple that of their Black and Latino counterparts, and significantly higher than women of the same age group.
This trend raises critical concerns as factors such as terminal illnesses, financial stress, and the stigma surrounding mental health impede older men from seeking help. In response, states like Utah and Colorado are enacting measures such as Donna’s Law, allowing individuals to voluntarily add their names to a no-sell list for firearms, aiming to reduce impulsive purchases that could lead to tragic outcomes.
