Robert Dear, the suspect in the 2015 Planned Parenthood shooting that left three people dead, has died while in federal custody at the age of 67. Dear, who faced charges at both federal and state levels, had been repeatedly found incompetent to stand trial, delaying legal proceedings related to his actions during the shooting at a Colorado Springs clinic. He was pronounced dead on November 22 at the United States Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri, with the official cause of death pending an investigation.
On November 27, 2015, Dear fatally shot two civilians, 36-year-old Jennifer Markovsky and 29-year-old Army veteran Ke’Arre Stewart, as well as Garrett Swasey, a campus police officer responding to the scene. Over 11 others were injured in the incident, which has continued to resonate in discussions on gun violence and access to reproductive health care. This case garnered particular attention due to the suspect’s erratic behavior during court hearings, where he declared himself a “warrior for the babies.”
