Sask. Introduces Changes to Firearms Act Amid Federal Plan

The Saskatchewan government introduces amendments to The Saskatchewan Firearms Act to address compensation for firearms owners as the federal government rolls out its buyback plan. Minister of Public Safety Tim McLeod emphasizes that these amendments will hold the federal government accountable for properly compensating lawful firearms owners whose property values have declined due to the new legislation.

Further highlighting the challenges faced by firearms owners, Firearms Commissioner Robert Freberg notes that the federal government has not secured seizure status in Saskatchewan, leaving owners without a compliant means to dispose of their devalued firearms. To enhance compliance and streamline the process, Saskatchewan is developing a software portal that allows owners to identify seized assets and obtain valuation certificates, ensuring they receive just compensation.
