A Sawyer man, William Wise Jr., is facing felony assault charges following a tense standoff with law enforcement on Sunday. The incident began when officers responded to a report that Wise had accidentally shot himself while cleaning his firearm. Upon their arrival, they witnessed Wise opening his door while holding a weapon and allegedly firing a shot into the air, prompting officers to retreat while additional law enforcement arrived on the scene.
During the standoff, Wise allegedly threatened to kill police officers and even claimed he would burn their squad cars. The situation escalated until he eventually left his home while pushing a canoe toward a nearby lake, where he was taken into custody. Authorities recovered multiple firearms from the scene, noting that Wise is prohibited from possessing firearms due to a previous conviction.
