Seattle City Attorney Ann Davison has filed a lawsuit against Glock and three local retailers, claiming the company knowingly manufactures handguns that can be easily modified into illegal machine guns. Central to the lawsuit is the “Glock switch,” a device that transforms a semi-automatic Glock so it can fire continuously with a single pull of the trigger, allowing it to discharge up to 30 rounds in two seconds. Davison emphasizes that this design poses significant public safety risks, particularly to children and first responders.
Data from Seattle Police reveals a troubling rise in gun violence associated with converted Glocks, with shell casings collected at crime scenes nearly doubling from 2020 to 2023. Notably, in 2023 alone, these converted firearms were linked to at least 20 separate incidents. Following a series of violent events, including a shooting that resulted in three deaths, the lawsuit seeks to compel Glock to modify its designs for public safety. As Davison argues, Glock’s prioritization of profits over safety stands in stark contrast to competitors who have adopted safer manufacturing standards.
