SF Mayor Names Anti-Gun Advocate as Police Commissioner

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie has appointed long-time anti-gun violence advocate Mattie Scott as the city’s next police commissioner. Scott, a dedicated community activist who lost her son to gun violence, aims to enhance collaboration between law enforcement and communities of color as she steps into this influential role.

Scott’s appointment comes as a significant shift in the commission, replacing Max Carter Oberstone. With a background that includes co-founding two nonprofits and serving as the California president of Brady United Against Gun Violence, Scott expresses her commitment to healing and building trust within the community. “The racism has to be torn down,” she states, highlighting her drive to foster unity and understanding.
