Sheinbaum Warns US Gunmakers Could Be “Accomplices” to Cartel Terrorism

During a recent press conference, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum raised significant concerns about the implications of U.S. gun manufacturers and distributors potentially being labeled as “accomplices” to cartel terrorism. Sheinbaum referenced Mexico’s ongoing lawsuit against U.S. gunmakers, emphasizing that if Mexican cartels were designated as terrorist organizations, the lawsuit would need to be expanded due to the alarming statistic that 74% of weapons used by these groups originate from the United States.

Furthermore, Sheinbaum urged the need for U.S. gunmakers to take more responsibility in preventing their products from falling into the hands of criminal organizations. This statement comes amid rising tensions regarding deportations and possible tariffs as the Trump administration continues to impose measures that could affect Mexico significantly, including a proposed 25% tariff on Mexican steel and aluminum. As over 13,000 deportees have returned to Mexico since Trump took office, Sheinbaum’s discussions on security and economic cooperation underscore the urgent relationship between the two nations.
