Shooting Follows Family Dollar Armed Robbery Attempt

Surveillance footage released by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office captures a tense armed robbery at a Family Dollar, where suspect Jamari Rashaud Akins, 20, demands money from the clerk while wielding a gun. Despite her pleas for safety, Akins escalates the situation before ultimately fleeing with $100 in cash, prompting a police chase that leads to a shootout.

As Officer Luis Mercado pursues Akins, he confronts him and is shot in the leg during the altercation. Mercado returns fire, fatally wounding Akins in the process. This incident marks the 10th officer-involved shooting for the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office this year, raising concerns over public safety and police-community relations in the area.
