Six men from Volusia County are sentenced to federal prison for their roles in smuggling military-grade firearms to Mexican drug cartels, including the notorious La Familia and La Nueva Generacion. The leader of the group, 34-year-old Angel Velazquez Delgado, received a nine-year sentence as part of a broader operation that involved purchasing high-caliber guns with drug profits and reselling them to the cartels.
This firearms trafficking ring, which sold about 11 Barrett .50 caliber rifles—capable of piercing armored vehicles—raised serious public safety concerns, as U.S. authorities confirmed that at least one trafficked firearm was linked to a shootout involving cartel members in Mexico. The investigation began when two members attempted to acquire these rifles from a licensed dealer, leading to the unveiling of their extensive operations, including direct communication with cartel leaders.
