Soldier Killed at Fort Leonard Wood Identified

The U.S. Army has identified Private Andrey Okunev, an 18-year-old National Guard soldier from California, as the individual killed at a rifle range at Fort Leonard Wood military base on September 5. Okunev, who was part of Company B, 1st Battalion, 48th Infantry Regiment, was pronounced dead following a shooting incident that occurred during training at the installation, which is located in the Missouri Ozarks.

An investigation is currently underway by Fort Leonard Wood law enforcement and the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division to determine the circumstances surrounding Okunev’s death. The command of Fort Leonard Wood expressed their condolences, stating they are “deeply saddened” by the loss and are providing support to impacted personnel, including grief counselors and chaplains, reflecting the deep care for the community within the Army ranks.
