Spirit of Detroit Lit Up for Gun Violence Awareness Day

The Spirit of Detroit statue illuminated in vibrant orange marks National Gun Violence Awareness Day, coinciding with a “Silence the Violence” rally aimed at raising awareness about the devastating impacts of gun violence. The event, organized by Rev. Barry Randolph, highlights a growing concern in the community as officials, including Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield, emphasize the significance of unity in addressing the ongoing challenges posed by gun violence.

During the rally, Detroit police Chief Todd Bettison reported a downward trend in gun crime, yet underscored the need for a proactive approach to gun safety. With over 27,000 unintentional firearm injuries annually in the U.S., he urged attendees to engage in conversations about firearm security in their homes. The rally also featured emotional testimonies from medical professionals like Dr. Larry Diebel, who called for a fundamental shift in societal values regarding the sanctity of human life and the seriousness of gun safety.
