Spotsylvania Installs Weapons Detection at Middle Schools

Spotsylvania County Public Schools plans to install Evolv weapons detection systems in all seven middle schools in response to increasing safety concerns, particularly after a third-grader brought a loaded gun to school earlier this year. The school board approved a $1 million purchase during a recent meeting, reflecting Superintendent Clint Mitchell’s commitment to enhancing safety in educational environments.

This initiative follows a previous installation at all five high schools and aims to address school violence prevention. Funding will come from state security grants and carryover funds, with Mitchell highlighting the goal of having these systems operational by early March 2026. The decision also comes amid discussions about allocating resources toward mental health support, as the superintendent continues to advocate for a comprehensive approach to student safety and well-being.
