A recent report from Everytown for Gun Safety reveals that stand-your-ground laws, present in over half the U.S. states, contribute to higher homicide rates and increased racial disparities in legal proceedings. The study indicates a notable 8% to 11% rise in monthly homicide and firearm homicide rates nationwide, with Southern states like Alabama and Florida experiencing increases of 10% or more since these laws’ implementation.
Researchers found that in states with stand-your-ground laws, the likelihood of justifiable homicide rulings differs dramatically based on the race of the shooter and victim, with white shooters facing leniency when paired with Black victims. Additionally, these laws incur an estimated annual cost of $11 billion due to gun homicides, affecting taxpayers as well as community safety. This report arrives amidst ongoing debates in various legislatures about self-defense laws and public perceptions surrounding gun rights.
