States Challenge Plan to Allow Sale of Rapid-Fire Triggers

Sixteen states are suing the Trump administration over its recent agreement to allow the sale of forced-reset triggers, devices that can enable semiautomatic rifles to fire more rapidly. This lawsuit, led by the attorneys general of Delaware, Maryland, and New Jersey, contends that returning previously seized devices violates federal law and poses significant risks to public safety and law enforcement.

The contentious issue revolves around the classification of these triggers as machine guns, a designation previously endorsed by the Biden administration. The settlement reached between the Justice Department and Rare Breed Triggers, the device’s manufacturer, allows their sale while requiring the return of triggers seized by authorities. As these legal battles continue to unfold, the implications for gun regulation and public safety remain a focal point of concern for both advocates and lawmakers.
