A group of 25 middle and high school students from Waukegan, North Chicago, and Zion actively engage civic leaders in a discussion on gun violence prevention during a recent Youth Firearm Violence Prevention Program. The initiative, backed by a $120,000 state grant, spans 12 weeks and educates participants on civic engagement, leadership, and essential skills like de-escalation.
Seventh grader Melody Neyland, motivated by personal stories of gun violence within her family, emphasizes her commitment to community safety, stating, “I’m looking for ways to help our community.” Her peer, Michael Womack, articulates the importance of connecting with lawmakers, sharing that direct dialogue with state officials can lead to meaningful change in legislation aimed at curbing gun violence.
