This raises critical questions about the purpose of these licenses, with the organization’s executive director noting that such licenses could be advantageous for buying and selling firearms beyond typical citizen restrictions.
The study suggests that many of these licensed individuals may be operating out of residential areas or non-gun-related businesses. With only 8% of license holders inspected by the ATF, the report underscores a regulatory gap, urging Illinois and local communities to better track these licenses to ensure compliance with zoning and business regulations.
