Dr. Rochelle Gaston Malone, mother of fallen Birmingham firefighter Jordan Melton, hosted the second annual Jordan Melton Safety Summit, emphasizing the importance of nonviolence for students. This event took place on what would have been Melton’s 31st birthday and aimed to inspire young people to choose proactive paths that prevent gun violence, an issue that has deeply affected their community.
During the summit at the A.G. Gaston Boys and Girls Club, Gaston Malone expanded programming from the previous year, introducing a curriculum focused on life skills and community engagement. With personal stories shared by attendees, including one student whose cousin survived a shooting, the summit fosters a dialogue on coping with violence and making positive life choices. The event also featured awards for club staff and a book giveaway, reinforcing the message of mentorship and support within the community.
