Supreme Court Considers Key Cases on Discrimination and Guns

The U.S. Supreme Court is set to address major legal questions, including a case on reverse discrimination that could redefine the criteria for majority group claims. Marlean Ames alleges discrimination when she was passed over for a promotion at the Ohio Department of Youth Services in favor of a lesbian colleague, challenging the requirement for plaintiffs to prove an employer’s intent to discriminate against the majority. This decision could lower the bar for future discrimination lawsuits.

Additionally, the Court will examine whether Mexico can pursue a $10 billion lawsuit against gun manufacturers like Smith & Wesson, accusing them of contributing to cartel violence. Justices express skepticism regarding the viability of such claims, which aim to hold gunmakers accountable for their role in gun violence. The Court is also considering the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s plans for temporary nuclear waste storage in Texas and New Mexico, emphasizing the ongoing challenges in securing safe disposal sites for hazardous materials.
