Supreme Court Likely to Dismiss Mexico’s Gun Maker Lawsuit

The U.S. Supreme Court indicates it will likely dismiss a lawsuit from the Mexican government against several gun manufacturers, including Smith & Wesson Brands. The lawsuit alleges that these companies contribute to the influx of firearms fueling violence related to drug cartels in Mexico.

During oral arguments in Washington, justices from across the ideological spectrum questioned the validity of the lawsuit, suggesting it could conflict with a 2005 federal law designed to protect gun manufacturers from such litigation. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson emphasized that the law plays a crucial role in delineating Congress’s authority to regulate the firearms industry, hinting at a potential dismissal that would reinforce existing industry liability protections.
