Supreme Court to Review $10B Lawsuit from Mexico

The U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear a significant lawsuit filed by the Mexican government against major American firearm manufacturers, seeking $10 billion in damages. Mexico contends that the companies’ business practices have directly contributed to the rampant gun violence fueled by drug cartels, alleging that 70% of the firearms used by these cartels originate from the U.S.

The gun manufacturers, including prominent names like Smith & Wesson and Glock, argue that they are shielded from such lawsuits under U.S. law, which typically protects them from civil litigation related to gun crimes. This case could have far-reaching implications, especially if the court’s decision influences similar legal actions, such as those sought by families affected by mass shootings, including the Sandy Hook families who secured a $73 million settlement.
