This Saturday marks the seventh anniversary of the tragic shooting at the Fifth Third Center in downtown Cincinnati, where three people were killed and two others injured. Whitney Austin, a survivor who was shot twelve times while entering the building for a meeting, recalls the moment she realized the gravity of the situation and the relief she felt when doctors confirmed she’d avoided major injuries.
Since that life-altering day, Austin has transformed her trauma into advocacy through her organization, Whitney Strong, which promotes gun violence prevention initiatives. She played a key role in championing the bipartisan Safer Communities Act, aiming to address gun safety and mental health issues, and continues to raise awareness about the ongoing impact of gun violence in communities.
