A Syracuse man, 18-year-old Rephayah Oselmo, is charged with second-degree murder stemming from a drive-by shooting that left 26-year-old Jakari Townsend dead on September 16. Oselmo was released on bail just weeks earlier after being charged for an earlier shooting incident, raising questions about the effectiveness of bail measures in preventing violent crimes.
Details reveal that Oselmo had his bail lowered from $50,000 to $10,000 prior to his release, allowing him to post bond and return to the streets. Shortly after, he is accused of riding an e-bike and firing at least 11 shots, resulting in Townsend’s death and injury to another person. Following a brief attempt to evade authorities in Arkansas, he has been apprehended and awaits extradition back to New York.
