Syracuse native Yolanda Seegars, having faced the harsh realities of gun violence in her own childhood, now leads Project RISE, a vital initiative that aids families impacted by such trauma. The program currently supports 160 at-risk youth and coordinates resources like counseling and community giveaways, especially crucial as SNAP benefits are set to expire soon.
Seegars emphasizes the importance of creating an “ecosystem of support,” which includes collaborating with local courts and providing assistance for youths transitioning from incarceration. By developing meaningful connections within the community, she aims to reduce systemic barriers and foster genuine change. “When you do see wins, it just fills your heart,” Seegars explains, underscoring her commitment to improving lives in Central New York.
