Texas House Considers Short-Barrel Firearms Bill

The Texas House is currently debating House Bill 259, which proposes to remove short-barrel firearms from the state’s list of prohibited weapons. Introduced by State Rep. Richard Hayes, the bill addresses growing concerns surrounding the use of stabilizing braces on pistols, which the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives recently ruled could classify certain firearms as short-barrel weapons.

The legislation, which parallels a similar bill already moving through the Senate, comes amid evolving regulatory stances on short-barrel firearms and their components. Currently, federal law requires short-barrel firearms owners to register their weapons with the ATF, go through background checks, and pay a $200 tax. As discussions continue, the implications of this bill could significantly alter firearm regulations in Texas.
