Gerardo Rafael Perez Jr., a 24-year-old from Laredo, Texas, pleads guilty in federal court to multiple charges related to trafficking military-grade weaponry to the Cartel Del Noreste, previously known as Los Zetas. Perez admits to conspiracy to traffic firearms and has connections to a network that illegally purchased high-powered weapons, including FNH SCAR and Barrett .50-caliber rifles, with plans to smuggle them into Mexico.
Federal agents discovered evidence of this operation during a search of Perez’s residence, where they found firearms, ammunition, and cartel-related jewelry. His actions contribute to the ongoing challenge of cartel violence, as Cartel Del Noreste remains designated as a foreign terrorist organization, primarily operating in the U.S.-Mexico border region. Perez could face up to 25 years in prison when sentenced.
