Trump Administration Legalizes Rapid-Fire Gun Modifications

The Trump administration has reached a legal settlement permitting the sale of “forced reset triggers” that can modify semiautomatic firearms to fire at increased rates, a move criticized by gun control advocates as effectively legalizing machine guns. Under the deal with manufacturer Rare Breed Triggers, the Justice Department stipulates that the company must refrain from developing similar devices for pistols and actively enforce its patents against competitors.

This settlement reverses previous federal efforts under the Biden administration to ban these conversion devices, which have been linked to increased gun violence, including use by drug traffickers and gangs. Critics of the settlement argue it undermines public safety, with organizations like Everytown for Gun Safety warning that it could lead to more tragedies in communities already struggling with gun violence.
