Trump DOJ to Challenge Illinois Assault Weapons Ban

The Department of Justice under former President Donald Trump is allowed to present oral arguments against Illinois’ ban on high-powered firearms during a federal appellate court hearing in September. Although not a party to the case, the DOJ’s civil rights chief, Harmeet Dhillon, will contend that the 2023 law undermines Second Amendment protections, aligning with gun rights advocates who oppose Governor JB Pritzker’s initiative that followed the tragic Highland Park mass shooting.

This development marks the Trump administration’s continuous engagement in legal battles concerning state regulations on firearms, as it champions the rights of gun owners. The case hinges on whether the Illinois ban adheres to a constitutional standard set by the U.S. Supreme Court, which requires firearm regulations to reflect historical precedent. As the hearing date approaches, the implications for gun rights and state authority are significant, raising questions on whether the ban could be upheld or face further challenges at higher judicial levels.
