Councilman Steve Kozachik is pushing for a ban on gun shows at the Tucson Convention Center, targeting the regulation of private gun sales that currently lack mandated background checks. He argues that allowing such transactions poses a “clear threat” to community safety and calls for Tucson to take a leadership stance on the issue, especially given the lack of regulation at the state and federal levels.
The proposed measure could significantly impact McMann Roadrunner Gun Show, a major player in the events that generates approximately $15,000 per show for the city. While McMann disputes the rationale behind the ban, asserting that it will adversely affect numerous vendors who do not sell firearms, Kozachik insists that public health must take precedence over potential lost revenue. The Councilman’s initiative will be formally introduced at the upcoming meeting on February 5.
