The City of Tulsa is set to vote on a new curfew for minors in response to rising youth gun violence, with plans to restrict their presence in downtown areas from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. This proposed measure comes after a recent shooting incident at the Juneteenth Festival, which resulted in one death and several injuries, highlighting a troubling pattern in the city. Mayor Monroe Nichols emphasized the need for such changes, citing 26 lives lost to gun violence since he took office in December.
The curfew is part of a broader initiative that includes the establishment of a task force aimed at addressing the root causes of gun violence among youth. Nichols stated his personal concern as a parent, noting, “There’s no reason to be hanging outside of a bar that you’re not old enough to get in.” The Tulsa City Council will convene to discuss and potentially enact the curfew as soon as the following day, joining other cities in adopting similar measures to enhance public safety.
