U.S. Army Tests New Scorpion Mortar System in Hawaii

The U.S. Army is testing the advanced 81 mm Scorpion mortar system, developed by Global Military Products, as part of its strategy to enhance mobile firepower on the battlefield. Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment conducted trials in Hawaii, focusing on its rapid deployment capabilities and automated fire control features over a five-day period starting October 20.

This lightweight mortar system boasts an ability to fire its first shot in approximately 30 seconds and is said to be the “world’s fastest mobile mortar.” It can be mounted on various vehicles and carries 72 shells of ammunition, with a firing rate of eight rounds per minute. With its testing results still pending, the Scorpion mortar promises significant advancements in combat speed and efficiency, potentially reducing targeting time by 85%.
