The U.S. Army is overhauling its combat strategies in response to lessons learned from Ukraine’s use of drones during the ongoing conflict with Russia. With drones responsible for approximately 70 percent of Russian casualties, the Army plans to equip every squad with unmanned systems by the end of 2026, dramatically altering traditional infantry and armor tactics that have been in place for decades.
In addition, the Army is reorganizing its units to prioritize drone operations, including the formation of specialized strike companies that deploy drones ahead of battalions to scout and identify threats. Ukrainian strategies, such as their rapid digital procurement system for drones, are also influencing U.S. logistics, with plans for the Army to produce over 10,000 small drones monthly starting in 2026, a shift that highlights the critical role of affordable drone technology in modern warfare.
