With legislation weakened over decades, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) faces considerable limitations in regulating gun manufacturers, importers, and dealers, exacerbating issues of gun violence that claim over 40,000 lives in the U.S. each year.
Importantly, the report outlines recommendations for enhancing regulation, such as imposing security measures for licensed dealers to prevent theft and granting the Consumer Product Safety Commission authority to oversee firearm safety. These proposed changes aim to hold the gun industry accountable for its role in facilitating gun violence and ensuring safer practices in an industry increasingly dominated by untraceable firearms known as ghost guns.
