Reports of a person carrying a gun near UMass Lowell resulted in a campus-wide lockdown on Wednesday afternoon, leaving students in a state of alarm. Alerts were issued around 2:30 p.m., urging students to shelter in place as police responded to the situation. Freshman Tyler Bernier described his experience barricaded inside a lecture hall with over 100 students on what was supposed to be the first day of classes, stating, “We’re okay, but a little jumpy.”
As authorities began evacuating buildings, junior Wafaa Kalai shared her shock at the unfolding events. “I thought that we are more on the safe side,” she said, reflecting a mix of disbelief and fear.
