Law enforcement agencies are grappling with an increasing number of ghost guns—privately made firearms that lack identifying serial numbers—complicating efforts to manage firearm-related crimes. In 2022 alone, the ATF reported approximately 27,000 suspected ghost guns recovered across the U.S., marking a 24% increase from the previous year, with recoveries in North Carolina and South Carolina linked to violent offenses.
As 3D printing technology becomes more accessible, the potential for individuals to manufacture these weapons at home rises significantly. In North Carolina, 967 ghost guns were recovered last year, with nine tied to homicides and violent crimes. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives underscores the urgent need for law enforcement training to navigate the challenges posed by these indistinguishable firearms, especially as they may end up in the hands of individuals prohibited from owning guns.
