Starting Thursday, Nov. 20, hunters can participate in waterfowl hunts at the Congressman Pete Stark Ecological Reserve in Hayward, managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). This ecological reserve offers a restored salt pond habitat and unique hunting opportunities, with no entry fees and access for up to 100 hunters on a first-come, first-served basis on select dates.
Wildlife Biologist Garrett Allen notes that hunters typically average two to three birds, with northern shoveler and American wigeon being common catches. Adult hunters must hold a valid California Hunting License and federal duck stamp, while junior hunters must be accompanied by an adult. The reserve also provides a boat launch for access to tidal areas, encouraging hunters to plan ahead for local tide conditions before heading out.
