The U.S. Army is actively seeking manufacturers to produce it’s new XM1208 155mm cluster shells, aiming for an annual output of 30,000 rounds. This initiative comes as the Army struggles to meet heightened demands for artillery munitions, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts such as the war in Ukraine, where current production stands at around 40,000 shells per month.
The XM1208 is designed to deliver multiple M99 Advanced Submunitions and is compatible with both M109A6/7 Paladins and M777A2 howitzers, offering a maximum range of about 14 miles. As the Army works on balancing the effectiveness of these cluster munitions with compliance to international treaties, it aims to achieve a dud rate below 1%, significantly minimizing the risk of unexploded ordnance in post-conflict areas.
