US Cuts Gun Violence Prevention Funding by $158 Million

The Trump administration has cut over half of the federal funding for gun violence prevention programs in the United States, reducing grants by $158 million. This significant funding reduction affects key cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, DC, and Baltimore, raising alarms over its potential impact on public safety and violence prevention initiatives.

Out of 145 anti-violence grants awarded by the US Department of Justice, 69 were unexpectedly canceled in April. A department spokesperson indicated that these eliminations are part of a broader reevaluation of grants, which are now being analyzed for their effectiveness in supporting law enforcement and combating violent crime. As these important programs face uncertainty, the implications for cities experiencing high levels of gun violence are particularly concerning.
