Uvalde Mothers Oppose Bill for Young Handgun Carriers

Mothers who lost their children in the Uvalde school shooting are advocating against House Bill 2470, which would allow individuals as young as 18 to purchase handguns in Texas. Currently, the law mandates that buyers must be at least 21 years old, and opponents warn that lowering this age could lead to increased gun-related incidents among youth.

During testimony before the Homeland Security, Public Safety and Veterans Affairs Committee, Gloria Cazares and Kimberly Rubio shared their devastating experiences and expressed their fears that easing gun restrictions would endanger more children. Cazares remarked, “This kind of pain forever changes who you are,” emphasizing the lasting impact of the tragedy in Uvalde, where 19 students and two teachers were killed. Their powerful testimonies highlight the tensions surrounding gun legislation that could set a precedent for similar laws across the country.
