The Firearms Research Center at the University of Wyoming has received a substantial grant of nearly $1 million from the U.S. Department of Education to launch a national educational initiative titled “Armed with Knowledge: A Nonpartisan Second Amendment Initiative.” This program aims to provide secondary school teachers with nonpartisan, historically grounded resources about the Second Amendment, addressing an often divisive topic by promoting factual and balanced discussions in the classroom.
The two-year project, funded by a $908,991 grant from the American History and Civics Education Program, will enhance educators’ understanding of the Second Amendment’s legal history and its implications in contemporary society. It will offer primary source materials, instructional videos, and opportunities for engagement with scholars across the political spectrum, culminating in an in-person conference for educators nationwide. This initiative is particularly timely, coinciding with the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary, as it seeks to foster critical inquiry and civic deliberation among students.
