Authorities have identified 47-year-old John Allan McDonald as the man who died in an officer-involved shooting in Vail on November 29. Responding to a domestic violence call involving a firearm, Pima County Sheriff’s deputies encountered McDonald after he allegedly fired a shot outside a residence and fled on foot.
During the encounter, law enforcement instructed McDonald to stop and show his hands, but he purportedly drew a handgun and advanced toward a deputy. In response, Deputy John Hisey-Long, a three-year veteran of the department, fired his weapon, striking McDonald who was later pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving measures. No other individuals were harmed during this incident, prompting an investigation by the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team.
