The Vicksburg Police Department has issued a warning to gun owners about the importance of securing their firearms after significant thefts have been reported. Since 2024, 171 guns have been stolen in the city, with nearly 70% taken from vehicles. Alarmingly, 46 of the 65 firearms stolen from January to September 2025 were taken from vehicles, including 13 from locked ones.
In a bid to combat this alarming trend, police highlight that stolen firearms often contribute to further crimes, endangering both officers and civilians. Chief Larry Burns emphasizes that responsible gun ownership entails not leaving firearms in vehicles, regardless of their security status. The department urges owners to check on their firearms regularly and keep serial numbers handy for possible recovery.
