Maryland Natural Resources Police have cited multiple black bear hunters for violations during the recent hunting season, raising concerns about the integrity of wildlife management practices. Among the reported infractions, hunters were found illegally baiting bears, which is prohibited in the state and carries fines ranging from $1,500 to $4,000 for first and subsequent offenses.
Noteworthy cases include a 37-year-old man caught hunting about 30 yards from a corn feeder and two individuals prohibited from firearms possession who were found with rifles while bear hunting. The black bear hunting season, which ran from October 20 to 25 in Western Maryland, involved a lottery selection of 1,050 participants, highlighting the significant interest in bear hunting despite the legal repercussions faced by some hunters.
