Virginia Needs Center to Address Gun Violence

Virginia’s General Assembly is advocating for the establishment of the Virginia Center for Firearm Violence Intervention and Prevention, a proposed hub designed to compile data and develop strategies to address the escalating gun violence in the state. This initiative comes as recent figures show that an average of one person is killed by a gun every seven hours in Virginia, compounding a tragic toll that now exceeds $14.2 billion annually in costs related to gun violence.

Designed by Delegate Cia Price, this legislation aims to enhance understanding of gun violence through data sharing and expert involvement, focusing on critical issues such as suicide and domestic violence. With nearly 60% of firearm deaths in 2023 resulting from suicide, advocates argue that the center could significantly reduce vulnerability among at-risk populations, especially young individuals under 30, who represent a substantial portion of homicide victims.
