WA Lawmakers Propose Weapons Ban in Kid-Friendly Areas

Washington State lawmakers are advancing a bill that would prohibit weapons in public areas where children are often present, including parks, playgrounds, and public buildings. Senate Bill 5098 aims to bolster safety by restricting firearm possession at events like county fairs and designating specific zones where firearms cannot be carried.

The legislation builds on previous laws aimed at limiting firearms in other sensitive locations such as schools and libraries. Supporters argue that clear signage and secure storage options will enhance safety, while opponents contend the bill’s broad language could infringe on the rights of law-abiding citizens. With violations classified as gross misdemeanors, the bill has already passed through committee and is now under consideration by the Rules Committee.
