A Lower Providence Township man is sentenced to 11½ to 23 months in jail after he brandished a handgun during an argument at a West Norriton Township Walmart. Ryan Andrew Hoy, 38, pleaded guilty to charges of carrying a firearm without a license and making terroristic threats in connection with the incident that occurred on September 28, 2024. The altercation escalated after Hoy was confronted about using a store scooter intended for handicapped individuals, leading to physical confrontations and ultimately a gun threat, where he told the victim, “I am going to kill your ass.”
Witnesses recorded the event, and security footage confirmed Hoy pulled the firearm during the altercation, endangering bystanders in the process. After his arrest, police recovered the Glock handgun Hoy admitted to possessing without a permit, and although multiple charges were filed, only the firearm-related ones proceeded to court. The sentence also requires Hoy to enter anger management counseling and undergo further evaluations, which sparks questions about safety in public spaces like grocery stores amidst growing concerns over gun violence.
