The Wheeling Police Department has launched a new National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) aimed at improving the investigation of gun-related crimes. This advanced forensic tool enables specialists to capture and analyze ballistic evidence, particularly shell casings from crime scenes, thereby enhancing law enforcement’s capability to link multiple crimes and identify potential suspects.
Funded by the Federal Project Safe Neighborhoods Program, the NIBIN system is seen as a pivotal addition to local law enforcement efforts. Sgt. Rob Safreed emphasized its significance by stating, “It’s another tool for investigators to use that allows us to link crimes,” highlighting the collaborative potential with other agencies to maximize the system’s effectiveness.
