Wilmington city leaders are taking proactive steps to address the alarming rise in firearm-related arrests, recently highlighted by multiple incidents involving stolen and illegally possessed guns. Among these cases, a 16-year-old faces murder charges for a shooting that left two young men dead, underscoring the urgent need for community engagement on gun safety.
In response, Council member Zanthia Oliver organized a free gun lock giveaway aimed at sparking essential conversations about firearm security within families. Although attendance was lower than hoped, she remains committed to the cause, stating her intent to hold more events to reach a wider audience and ensure that families feel empowered to discuss safe gun practices at home.
