The Wisconsin Natural Resources Board has approved a major realignment of deer management unit boundaries, which will take effect for the 2025 hunting seasons. This marks the most extensive revision in over a decade, as changes include new unit names and a return to habitat-based management in northern and central forest regions.
Among the key adjustments, units in the northern forest region will be numbered between 101 and 126, while those in the central forest region will use numbers from 201 to 206. This shift comes after numerous complaints from hunters about the excessive issuance of antlerless permits, prompting the Department of Natural Resources to reevaluate management strategies. The changes aim to balance deer populations effectively and will be supported by a public comment period that showed 75% of participants favoring the return to habitat-based units.
