Wisconsin health and environmental authorities have issued a significant “Do Not Eat” advisory for fish and deer in Oneida County, specifically around the Town of Stella, due to elevated levels of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), a dangerous chemical. The advisory affects all species of fish from several local lakes, where tests revealed concerning contamination levels in fish tissue, prompting officials to safeguard community health.
In addition to fish, deer hunters within a five-mile radius of the town hall are advised to limit consumption of venison to one meal per month, while deer liver is warned against altogether. This updated guidance comes after recent tests on local deer revealed high PFOS concentrations, especially in liver tissue, which tends to accumulate these hazardous compounds. Wisconsin’s Department of Natural Resources emphasizes the importance of adhering to these advisories to prevent potential health risks associated with PFAS exposure.
